Protected Areas of Armenia
Reservations
- Sev Lich
- was established in 1987 in the southern part of Armenia and
covers the crater and eastern slope of the Mets Ishkhanasar Mount. The reservation
rests at an altitude of 2658m protecting the unique alpine watershed with plant
and animal communities of volcanic origin.
- Juniper Forests
- was established in 1958 to protect the unique
and relict juniper forests and local wildlife in the eastern slopes of the
Sevan Ridge (Gegharkunik Province).
- Yew of Akhnabat
- was established in 1958 to preserve the unique park of relict yew at the western slopes of the Miavor Ridge at altitudes
of 1400-1700m in the Gegharkunik Province.
- Hazelnut
- was established in 1958 to protect the relict hazelnut and yew
parks in the Khajakhbur River basin at altitudes of 1500-1800m in the Gegharkunik
Province.
- Pine of Banx
- was established in 1959 to protect the unique arboretum park
of pine of Banx located in the northern slopes of the Tsaghkuniats Ridge and in the Marmarik
River basin at altitudes of 1800-2000m in the Kotayk Province.
- Sands of Goravan
- was established in 1959 to protect the
residual quick sands and boasts unique plants and wildlife at the steep slopes
(alt. 1100-1200m) of the Ararat Valley (in the Ararat Province).
- Juniper Forest of Her-Her
- was founded in 1958 to conserve the relict juniper
forest/pear orchard and supports wildlife in the Her-Her River basin at
altitudes of 1400-1700m, in the Vayots Dzor Province.
- Jermuk (forests)
- was established in 1958 to protect Armenian
mouflon, besoar goats, wild boars and mountainous forests at altitudes of
1100-2800m in the Arpa River basin (Vayots Dzor Province).
- Jermuk (hydrological)
- was established in 1983 to protect the mineral water springs at the upper watershed of the Arpa River in the Vayots
Dzor Province.
- Pine of Giulagarak
- was founded in 1958 to conserve the relict pine forest found in the
slopes of the Bazum and Pambak Mountains, at altitudes of 1400-1900m in the Tavush
Province.
- Park of Plane Tree
- was established in 1958 to protect the only natural
plane-tree park in the Caucasus, found at altitudes of 700-750m in the basin of the Tzav River
in the Siunik Province.
- Rose Bay Rhododendron
- was founded in 1959 to conserve the Caucasian rosebay at
at altitudes of 1900-2200m in the Pambak and Tskaghkuniats Ridges (in the Kotayk, Lory and Tavush Provinces).
Margahovit was established in 1959 to protect goats, bears, Caucasian Grouses found at altitudes of 1900-2200m in the northern slopes of the Pambak Range and in the Pambak River basin (in the Lori
Province).
- Aragats
- was established in 1959 to protect the alpine flora
around the Kari Lake and the adjacent grasslands of the Aragats Mountain at altitudes of
3250-3350m in the Aragats Province.
- Arzakan/Meghradzor
- was founded in 1971 with aim to protect goats, deer, grey
bears, wild boars and Caucasian Grouses in the basins of the Marmarik and
Dalarik Rivers, at altitudes of 1600-2100m in the Kotayk Province.
- Ijevan
- was founded in 1971 to protect rare and endemic animal species such as
besoar goats, wild boars, grey bears, panthers and porcupines at mountain ranges
(alt. 900-2100m) in the Tavush Province.
- Ghandzakar
- was established in 1971 to protect rare and endemic animal
species such as besoar goats, wild boars, grey bears, panthers and porcupines in
the Paytajur River basin (alt. 1500-2700m) in the Tavush Province.
- Ghetik
- was founded in 1971 to protect rare and endemic animal species such as besoar
goats, wild boars, grey bears, panthers and porcupines in the Ghetik River basin
(alt. 1500-2700m), in the Tavush Province.
- Eghegnadzor
- was established in 1971 to protect rare and endemic animal
species such as besoar goats, wild boars, grey bears, panthers and porcupines in the
Tsagheghis River basin (alt. 1200-2800m), in the Vayots Dzor Province.
- Goris
- protects rare and endemic animal species such as besoar goats,
wild boars, grey bears, panthers and porcupines in the Vorotan and Vararakh Rivers
basin (alt. 1400-2800m) in the Siunik Province.
- Boghakar
- was founded in 1989 to protect Armenian flora and fauna
in the southern slopes of the Zangezur Ridge (alt. 1400-2180m), in the Tavush
Province.
- Vordan Karmir
- was established in 1987 to protect the unique plant community of
the Vordan Karmir in the desert areas of the Ararat Valley at altitudes of 800-1200m,
in the Ararat Province.
- Hankavan
- was established in 1981 to protect mineral water springs at the upper
watershed of the Marmarik River in the Kotayk Province.
